If you?ve ever met a Swede, chances are you asked her the following question: ?What do you think of [ABBA/Ikea/The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo/socialized medicine/the Swedish Chef]??

For Swedes, it?s the last of these questions?the one about the unintelligible, shotgun-wielding, and much beloved chaos Muppet?that is especially vexing.

I know this because it was one of the first questions I asked my Swedish wife when we were introduced. ?I don?t see how it?s funny,? she responded in a tone that I took at the time to be an endearingly sarcastic deadpan, but would soon learn was actually an endearingly sincere deadpan.

The Swedish Chef does not speak any known language, and the fact that his nonsense words are so widely interpreted as Swedish-sounding is bewildering and annoying to Swedes.

?What has always struck me is that the Chef is probably based on a Norwegian sing-songish accent rather than a Swedish one,? Maaret Koskinen, a film studies professor at Stockholm University, wrote in an email when I asked her about the Swedish Chef?s cultural influence in Sweden.

Swedish and Norwegian share a common linguistic antecedent, and Swedes and Norwegians easily understand each other?s languages. The accents are quite different, however, and there are words that are exclusive to each dialect. The tongues are dissimilar enough for Swedes to be able to hear Norwegian in the Swedish Chef?s ramblings instead of Swedish.

?I think it sounds much more Norwegian,? Cecilia Browning, the general manager of Washington D.C.?s House of Sweden (the home of the Swedish Embassy), told me when I asked her about the accent.

It turns out that these impressions are supported by academic research. According to Stockholm University linguistics professor Tomas Riad, the Swedish Chef?s accent could as easily be from Oslo as from Stockholm.

Riad, one of 18 members of the prestigious Swedish Academy, which determines who wins the Nobel Prize in literature, wrote an article in the Swedish language magazine Spraktidningen titled "B?rk B?rk B?rk. Ehula Hule de Chokolad Muus.? (The title comes from the Chef?s trademark untranslatable gibberish and means nothing in Swedish.)

While Swedes obviously don?t understand a single word spoken by the Swedish Chef, Riad writes, the Chef makes them think of Norwegian because of the way his tone rises and falls.

TSC can?t possibly be from the Sk?neland region on the southern tip of Sweden or from the Dalarna region in the middle of the country, for example, because these accents don?t feature TSC?s lilting, low-high-low tonality. Take a listen for yourself. Here is a well-known (in Sweden) interview of Swedish soccer star and Sk?ne native Zlatan Ibrahimovi?, in which the player grows increasingly frustrated with sports journalist (and fellow Sk?ne native) Peter Jihde because of his line of questioning:

Even an English-speaker notices that Zlatan speaks with a less pronounced sing-song aspect than the Swedish Chef. That?s because the Sk?ne accent has what linguists refer to as a single tonal peak. Norwegian, on the other hand, goes back and forth between two tonal peaks, a ?singing quality? that stands out to nonspeakers. Stockholm Swedish has something of this singing quality, too, but it?s even more pronounced in Norwegian, as the high tone keeps rising at the end of each phrase. So when Swedes?even Swedes from Stockholm?hear TSC?s exaggerated tonal rise, they hear something akin to Norwegian. Note how the Swedish Chef?s voice rises and falls and rises on the words that sound like hung deshung dehur veborg at the start of this clip:

Now watch this clip of legendary Norwegian Olympic biathlete Ole Einar Bj?rndalen on a Norwegian cooking show. At about the 60-second mark, you can hear him start to talk in a sing-song Norwegian accent with the typical tonal rises:

English employs changes in pitch to signify intonation (to indicate we?re asking a question, for example), but Swedish and Norwegian use ?lexical tones? to signify a word?s meaning. Constantly changing intonation is therefore a common feature of both languages. English-speakers simply aren?t used to it, which is why any such shift in intonation sounds plausibly Scandinavian to us. ?

?It?s what you people here, when you hear Swedish,? Riad told me.

As for his personal opinion on whether or not TSC sounds Swedish, Riad is with his countrymen. ?I can see where it comes from, but it doesn?t sound like Swedish to me,? he says.

Aside from the sound of his speech, there is a second aspect of the Swedish Chef that bugs Swedes, especially those living abroad: the frequency with which they are asked about the Swedish Chef.

All eyes on Isaac as GOP convention approaches

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney's Republican National Convention sputters to life with the lonely banging of a gavel in a mostly empty hall, hardly the opening splash intended for the nation. With a sprawling and strengthening storm bearing down on the region, the party hastily rewrote the convention script to present the extravaganza's prime rituals and headline speakers later in the week ? Tropical Storm Isaac willing.

Nothing was certain Monday as the storm carved an unpredictable path toward the Gulf of Mexico, forcing planners to compress four days of events into three and otherwise improvise.

It was a complication, at best, for a party determined to cast the close election as a referendum on President Barack Obama's economic stewardship and Romney as the best hope for jobs and prosperity.

From New Hampshire, where he and his wife, Ann, rehearsed their convention speeches in a high school auditorium, Romney expressed worry about the people in Isaac's way while predicting a "great convention" nonetheless. Other officials put on a brave face, too.

But Sally Bradshaw, a Florida Republican and longtime senior aide to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, was not so sanguine. "It's a mess all around and it's fraught with risk," she said. "It's not good for anybody ? particularly the people impacted by the storm."

The concern was two-fold: that Tampa, hosting thousands of GOP delegates, would get sideswiped by the storm; and that it would be unseemly to engage in days of political celebration if Isaac made a destructive landfall anywhere on U.S. soil.

"You can tone down the happy-days-are-here-again a bit," said Rich Galen, a veteran Republican consultant in Washington. "Maybe you don't have the biggest balloon drop in history."

Said Reince Priebus, the Republican National Committee chairman: "We're moving forward, but we are going to be nimble." Real estate developer Donald Trump, who had been scheduled to speak Monday, was dropped from the convention program because of the reshuffling.

Republicans hoped another distracting tempest would blow over, too, concerning abortion. The Obama campaign and its allies have doubled down in efforts to exploit remarks more than a week ago by Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP's candidate for a Senate seat from Missouri, that a woman's body has a way of preventing pregnancy in the case of a "legitimate rape." The claim is unsupported by medical evidence. The congressman quickly apologized but resisted Romney's pressure to drop out of the race.

Romney, in a Fox interview, said in comments broadcast Sunday that the fallout over Akin's remarks "hurts our party and I think is damaging to women," adding: "It really is sad, isn't it? With all the issues that America faces, for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level."

In the reworked convention schedule released early Sunday evening, organizers planned a pro forma opening Monday afternoon, lasting no more than five minutes or so. Priebus was to gavel the convention to order, then immediately recess. Few delegates were expected to attend. In the only bit of convention-hall theater, a debt clock was to be set in motion, to tally the nation's red ink during the convention.

Speakers who had been scheduled for Monday were to start making the case against Obama, under the day's theme, "we can do better." That theme now will be threaded through the following three days, said Romney adviser Russ Schriefer, in charge of the convention's planning. "Even though the days will be abbreviated, I absolutely believe we'll be able to get our message out," he said.

The roll call of state delegations affirming Romney as the party's nominee now is to unfold Tuesday, an evening capped by speeches from Ann Romney and an assortment of GOP governors. Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, gets the prime-time spotlight Wednesday and Romney closes out the spectacle Thursday night, his springboard into the final leg of the contest. That's all if the storm brings no further complications.

So far, many delegates were taking the shakeup in stride. "People are pretty resilient, and people knew going in that there were some weather issues," said Pat Shortridge, the Minnesota state GOP chairman, from Lino Lakes, Minn. "I don't think it's dampened enthusiasm."

Weather was recognized as potential trouble when Republicans chose to hold their convention in politically vital Florida during hurricane season, a decision made well before Romney locked up the nomination. And it's clear that memories of Hurricane Katrina, and the failure of a Republican administration to respond effectively to its Gulf Coast devastation in 2005, are hanging over Tampa now. Republicans have been so sensitive to the political risks from natural disasters that they delayed the start of their national convention by a day in 2008, when Hurricane Gustav bore down on the Gulf, far from their meeting in Minnesota.

And it surely wasn't lost on Tampa convention organizers that a gathering storm gave Obama an opportunity to show leadership. As the forecast worsened, the president directed the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help.

"The president also told the governor to let him know if there are any unmet needs or additional resources the administration could provide, including in support of efforts to ensure the safety of those visiting the state for the Republican National Convention," the White House said Sunday.

Both sides grappled with how to conduct their politicking in the face of the storm. Vice President Joe Biden, who had been prepared to make as much political hay as possible over the Republican convention, canceled a campaign swing through Florida on Monday and Tuesday.

Polls find a tight race, and it's one that is likely to be settled in a small number of battleground states.

An estimated $500 million has been spent on television commercials so far by the two candidates, their parties and supporting outside groups, nearly all of it in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada. Those states account for 100 electoral votes out of the 270 needed to win the White House. Republicans hope to expand the electoral map to include Pennsylvania, Michigan, perhaps Ryan's Wisconsin and even Minnesota, states with 68 electoral votes combined.

All four are usually reliably Democratic in presidential campaigns. Yet Romney has a financial advantage over the president, according to the most recent fundraising reports, and a move by the Republicans into any of them could force Obama to dip into his own campaign treasury in regions he has considered relatively safe.

Republican office-holders past and present said the economy is the key if Romney is to expand his appeal to women and Hispanic voters.

"We have to point out that the unemployment rate among young women is now 16 percent, that the unemployment rate among Hispanics is very high, that jobs and the economy are more important, perhaps, than maybe other issues," said Arizona Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in 2008.

Bush agreed, saying that Romney "can make inroads if he focuses on how do we create a climate of job creation and economic growth." If he succeeds, "I think people will move back towards the Republican side," the former Florida governor added.

Obama leads Romney among female voters and by an overwhelming margin among Hispanics, but trails substantially among men.

AVMA Releases Pet Census Results | Steve Dale's Pet World

With cat population on the decline, what does this mean for shelter cats?

SAN DIEGO, CA -- Pet ownership is on the decline. On Aug. 3, during the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Convention here, Dr. Karen Felsted revealed new data from the soon-to-be-released 2012 AVMA Pet Demographic Sourcebook (based on data collected in 2011). This pet census polls over 50,000 American households every five years. While cats remain America's most popular pets, they've taken a hit in popularity for the first time since the survey was initiated in 1983.

There are now 74.1 million pet cats in the U.S., a decline of over nine percent from when the survey was last conducted in 2006. Dogs aren't exactly having their day; their numbers also went do down, dropping three percent. The survey indicates there are 69.9 million pet dogs in America.

It's interesting to note the enormous change in culture, even since 1983. In that first AVMA survey, there were 55.6 million dogs, and 52.2 million cats in America. Cats took over in 1987 as America's most popular pet and they haven't looked back. Overall, the pet population has grown at a faster pace than the human population.

Still, in 2011 numbers dropped. The number of pet birds in the U.S. totally crash landed in this most recent survey, falling about 26 percent from five years ago to 8.3 million. The horse population also took a hit, down about 33 percent to 4.9 million compared to 2006.

Why the decline in the pet population?

"The economy plays a significant role. Beyond that, it's simply conjecture," said Felsted, of Felsted Veterinary Consultants, Richardson, TX. Certainly, it should come as no surprise that the survey indicates the number of households with at least one pet has dropped just over two percent since 2006.

With recent reports of a decline in veterinary visits for all pets, it's good to see that in the new survey, veterinary visits for dogs actually increased just over nine percent over 2006.

However, cats are now clearly lagging behind in several ways. For starters, vet visits for cats are down over four percent from 2006. In fact, nearly half of all pet cats didn't even see a veterinarian in 2011, according to the survey.

The AVMA survey indicates two-thirds of all cat owners understand the importance of preventive care checkups, which is far higher than other industry reports. If this statistic is accurate, however, many owners are clearly not seeing a veterinarian unless their pet is ill. Unfortunately, not all owners may recognize when a cat is sick, since cats are so adept at masking illness.

Despite not visiting the veterinarian, nearly 80 percent of dog and cat owners maintain that they're happy with the services their veterinarian supplies, and pleased with the facility and clinic staff, according to the survey. At the same time, pet owners are increasingly receiving information about pet health from elsewhere, most often the Internet.

While pets in many European countries are insured, pet insurance is gradually catching on in the U.S. According to the survey, six percent of dogs and nine percent of horses are now insured. Cats continue to lag behind here, too, with only three percent are insured.

Additional results from the 2012 AVMA Pet Demographic Sourcebook are expected to be available this fall.

New York, Aug 24: Singer Justin Timberlake is ready to sell off his New York bachelor pad in preparation for his married life.

Timberlake, who is set to marry actress Jessica Biel later this year, has put his penthouse apartment up for sale at an asking price of 4.78 million pounds, reports thesun.co.uk.

It is a three-bedroom residence in Manhattan's trendy Soho district, and has a fireplace and a terrace. Timberlake bought it for 4.1 million pounds in 2010.

Timberlake, 31, and Biel, 30, got engaged in a ski resort in US during Christmas.

South Sudan denies abuses cited by HRW in Jonglei report

JUBA (Reuters) - The head of a South Sudan disarmament campaign dismissed a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report saying soldiers had raped, beaten, tortured and killed civilians during the campaign in Jonglei, the country's largest state.

South Sudan seceded from Sudan a year ago under a 2005 peace deal and is awash with firearms after a decades-long civil war with Khartoum that killed an estimated two million people.

Run mostly by former guerilla fighters, South Sudan's nascent government has struggled to assert control over its vast and restive territories since declaring independence.

HRW, citing local officials, victims and witnesses, said soldiers in the national Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), have committed the abuses since the disarmament campaign began in March, particularly in the eastern state's Pibor county.

The group urged the newly independent nation to investigate and punish those responsible.

Kuol Dim Kuol, head of the campaign in Jonglei, rejected the report and said the operation had succeeded in collecting thousands of guns.

"I believe those reports are not realistic," he told Reuters by phone from Jonglei.

The SPLA had mechanisms in place to hold unruly soldiers responsible, he said. "As I am talking to you now, I have about 30 SPLA who have been dismissed" because of abuses, he said.

South Sudan launched the campaign in Jonglei in response to a series of inter-communal and retaliatory attacks which began before independence and have killed thousands of people.

"In Pibor we documented cases of abuse by disarmament forces, particularly torture - torture in the form of soldiers dipping people's heads into water with the objective of extracting information about the location of weapons," HRW research fellow Elizabeth Ashamu told Reuters.

She said HRW had recorded beatings and killings as well as interviewing a victim of rape. A U.N. report issued this week said monitoring teams reported a dozen alleged cases of rape during the campaign in Jonglei.

A severe lack of infrastructure in Jonglei has hampered efforts by the government and relief agencies to assist tens of thousands of civilians made homeless by ethnic clashes.

South Sudan voted overwhelmingly for independence from Sudan in a 2011 referendum promised under the peace deal that ended the civil war. The two states are still negotiating issues including border security and disputed territories, and the two armies have clashed in border states since secession.

Because I Am Not My Freaking Illness | On Oxnard Shores

On Wednesday, I cancelled therapy indefinitely. Left a message for my therapist, told him I didn?t want to do the hypnotherapy thing to re-experience trauma and whatever to make all the feelings go away and thereby unblock my creativity. But not in so many words. Just said, I?m not open to it, and I?m taking a break, will call back if I feel like talking, etc. However, I have recently realized that I don?t want to talk anymore but start doing and get on with my life. I was reading that women go into menopause in their 40s-50s. I want to have a sex life/partner before I dry up. I want more in life, so screw it, and screw the naysayers, the doubters.

I?m going to try. I want to beat this inertia. I think I have more to give. I want to live my life, my dream. Not retire in Oxnard all alone with a depressed outlook and wait until my parents die to be free, and end up killing myself because I find out I have no one, nothing, at all. I want to finish my book, try to get it published, lose weight, and not act like a mental patient. And someday fall in love again for real and have a life partner, companion, and all those good things I deserve. Speak my mind. Own my voice. Not let anyone but me define me. And try to always speak and write in such a way that I can be proud of myself. Maybe I am being unrealistic, but fuck it. Having a big dream is better than not having one at all.

I think I am a smarter person than the way I have expressed myself at times in my blog and other writings (i.e., erotica). Maybe I am setting myself up for failure or disappointment. Maybe I am really really a fucked up mentally ill human being, and I am just deluding myself. But I don?t think I?m stupid. I was smart enough to get a Bachelor?s in English and a Master?s in Creative Writing. I don?t want to be my illness. I want to be more than a maybe she could have been. I just can?t imagine my life going on like this. I don?t want to be afraid anymore. Should I give up and be my illness, or should I try, just try, to be more than this sad and lonely person who hardly leaves the house? Whatever. I?m finishing the novel, damn it. I?m going to be a bipolar who makes it. Or at least, I?m going to try.

Iraq expects first F-16 fighter jets in 2013

Iraq expects to receive the first group of F-16 warplanes next year, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's spokesman said on Thursday, after US officials said the aircraft would not arrive until 2014.

"Iraq is waiting to receive the first group of the F-16 warplanes in March 2013," Ali Mussawi told AFP.

"According to the agreement made with the United States of America, the first group, numbering 18 aircraft, arrives in March," Mussawi said.

US officials said during a visit by the country's top officer to Iraq that Washington was carrying out $12 billion worth of arms and training contracts in Iraq, with the first batch of the 36 F-16 fighter jets Iraq has ordered set to be delivered in September 2014.

Washington agreed last year to sell the F-16s to Baghdad in a multi-billion-dollar deal aimed at increasing the capabilities of Iraq's fledgling air force, a weak point in its national defences.

While Iraq's security forces are regarded as able to maintain internal security, Iraqi and US officials acknowledge they cannot protect Iraq's airspace, borders or territorial waters.

Until last year, when US forces withdrew from Iraq, American troops had helped Baghdad carry out those tasks.

When Going Home Becomes Your Holiday - World Nomads Journals

Many times in the past two years I envisioned what coming home would be like. It was often when I was riding on trains, or trying to sleep at night. I thought it would perhaps be something similar to out of a movie with meeting loved ones with hugs and tears.

I finally got that chance to come home for a visit. I left for a holiday and found myself living abroad. Ironically, now going home has become the holiday. I flew into JFK airport with my partner Steve. Going through customs wasn't the nightmare I thought it would be, as I had visited many countries?while I was gone.?My Aunt and Grandmother were kind enough to arrange for someone to pick us up and drive us home to New Jersey. I was a bit disorientated from the 16 and a half hours in the air but I still was able to take the traffic and highways in. After awhile, we were there, pulling up to my Grandmother's house where we would stay for a few weeks. We collected our bags, went to the house, and got the greeting I had been waiting for.

It was like it had only been a few weeks since I last saw her and my Aunt, instead of a few years. It was a bizarre feeling really. And comforting. I would say that would sum up my time at home, comforting and familiar. I suppose with facebook and Skype allowing me to keep in touch with everyone it makes sense. As the weeks passed, I met up with many people and it was a similar experience. Some people perhaps changed slightly in appearance but visits with them felt like I never went on a trip at all. We picked up the same conversations that we left off with years ago. It makes me think, if I hadn't left for this big trip then this would still be my life as well. I am certainly glad that I went on the trip that I did but now I begin to wonder if it's time to go back to the old life. It certainly contains a comforting element that I have yet to find in my life in New Zealand. I'm not going to lie, I miss the career, the extra funds, the strong friendships and the family. I'm starting to think again about setting down the roots.

Things haven't really changed but I will say that my eyes looking upon everything have. My life in Queenstown is very small and sheltered and experiencing again one of the most populated areas in the States has been a bit of a shock. For one thing I was initially bewildered at all the variety, especially in the grocery stores. I enjoyed shopping as I do feel that fashion styles are slightly different here than in New Zealand. I forgot how dependent us Americans are on cars and lack of opportunities to exercise outside of the gym. I nearly had a melt down driving outside the Washington DC area from the cars and traffic on 95 South. I found America to not be as cheap as I remembered it being, with the exception of the petrol. That was a nice change. It seems like everyone has a smart phone now, and when did they start putting those little phone bar codes on everything? And what is with all the #twitter stuff everywhere as well? I found my diet changed as I was able to eat more chicken and vegetables again, these two things being especially expensive in Queenstown. Having a a Grandmother and parents to cook food for us was nice as well.

Going to New York City was my favorite part. Steve my partner had never been, I ended up doing things I never had done before, such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the 9/11 Memorial, and Top of the Rock. Seeing a city you are familiar with after traveling is something else. If anything, I think I appreciate NYC even more. I have been to many, many cities in my travels. Each one has its own personality with the people, the transport, and the buildings. I enjoyed the cities in Europe with all of their history and culture. I liked the cities in China for their differences from the Western World. I found myself a bit bored with the Australian cities being a bit too modern (sorry). There's just something about NYC that I love. Perhaps it's the blend of modern skyscrapers with classic architecture. Or the craziness of the cab drivers and traffic. It could be the familiar unpleasant smell of the subways coming up from the vents in the sidewalks, or how there always seems to be something going around, no matter where you look. It's very interesting how traveling can make you open your eyes up more to the world that you live in.

Going home certainly had many happy moments. I got to see friends and family that I missed dearly. But it was a bit frustrating and sad as well. You see everyone for a bit, but then you have to say goodbye again. It pulls at the heart strings. It's easier to deal with not being around people when you are far away and haven't seem them in awhile. But when they are right there, and you find yourselves laughing like you used to, joking like you used to, and not having a care in the world with the people that you love you don't want to leave it again. I know that it will be fine when I get back to New Zealand, but when I have to say goodbye to people it can feel like a cold and empty place. When I was on my travels, and even settled abroad I often felt alone, even though I have been fortunate to form some friendships and relations with people. Going home has been a nice reminder that I still matter to people. I guess that makes the hurt of saying goodbye again worth it.

I'd like to thank everyone at home for making my visit worthwhile, especially to my Grandmother, Aunts, sister, mother, father and step-mom. Thanks also to my friends for making the effort to see us, even if it may have been for a few hours. Believe me, I wish it could have been more.

I hope it's less than 2 more years before the next time I visit, and until then I will be thinking of you all fondly.

Bonobo genius makes stone tools like early humans did

Kanzi the bonobo continues to impress. Not content with learning sign language or making up "words" for things like banana or juice, he now seems capable of making stone tools on a par with the efforts of early humans.

Eviatar Nevo of the University of Haifa in Israel and his colleagues sealed food inside a log to mimic marrow locked inside long bones, and watched Kanzi, a 30-year-old male bonobo chimp, try to extract it. While a companion bonobo attempted the problem a handful of times, and succeeded only by smashing the log on the ground, Kanzi took a longer and arguably more sophisticated approach.

Both had been taught to knap flint flakes in the 1990s, holding a stone core in one hand and using another as a hammer. Kanzi used the tools he created to come at the log in a variety of ways: inserting sticks into seams in the log, throwing projectiles at it, and employing stone flints as choppers, drills, and scrapers. In the end, he got food out of 24 logs, while his companion managed just two.

Perhaps most remarkable about the tools Kanzi created is their resemblance to early hominid tools. Both bonobos made and used tools to obtain food ? either by extracting it from logs or by digging it out of the ground. But only Kanzi's met the criteria for both tool groups made by early Homo: wedges and choppers, and scrapers and drills.

Do Kanzi's skills translate to all bonobos? It's hard to say. The abilities of animals like Alex the parrot, who could purportedly count to six, and Betty the crow, who crafted a hook out of wire, sometimes prompt claims about the intelligence of an entire species. But since these animals are raised in unusual environments where they frequently interact with humans, their cases may be too singular to extrapolate their talents to their brethren.

The findings will fuel the ongoing debate over whether stone tools mark the beginning of modern human culture, or predate our Homo genus. They appear to suggest the latter ? though critics will point out that Kanzi and his companion were taught how to make the tools. Whether the behaviour could arise in nature is unclear.
