Presidential Election 2012: Nasty Campaign Tactics Surface Ahead Of Decision Day

MIAMI ? With a week to go until Election Day, the nasty campaign tactics are coming out.

People in Florida, Virginia and Indiana have gotten calls falsely telling them they can vote early by phone and don't need to go to a polling place. In suburban Broward County, Fla., a handful of elderly voters who requested absentee ballots say they were visited by unknown people claiming to be authorized to collect the ballots.

And there's a mysterious DVD popping up in mailboxes that purports to be a documentary raising questions about the true identity of President Barack Obama's father.

It's one more indication of just how close this presidential election is. Voting rights advocates say reports of political deception and underhandedness are on the rise.

"Unfortunately it seems like the shadowy individuals that want to prevent people from voting are doing things earlier," said Eric Marshall, legal mobilization manager at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The organization is part of a coalition called Election Protection that is monitoring voting access and rights nationwide, including a toll-free hotline set up to take complaints.

"Each American's vote matters. It's important to them and it's important to the community," Marshall said.

Indiana's secretary of state launched an investigation of the phony voting instructions being phoned to homes in that state, and Virginia officials issued a warning to voters there asking them to report any such calls.

In the Broward County, Fla., case, elderly voters "were told, `I'm an official and I'm here to pick up your absentee ballot,'" said Alma Gonzalez, a senior Florida Democratic Party official working on voter protection efforts. "There is no official who picks up your ballot."

In addition to those cases, garish billboards warning that voter fraud is a crime punishable by jail time and fines were put up in minority neighborhoods in Ohio and Wisconsin. They were recently taken down amid complaints they were aimed at intimidating African-American and Latino voters. The people behind the billboards have not come forward.

"It's hard to believe that these were just public service announcements," Marshall said. "Those neighborhoods were specifically targeted."

"It doesn't pass the smell test."

Independent Florida voter Jane Bowman smelled something bad, too, when she recently discovered a DVD in her mailbox questioning the identity of Obama's father.

"I think it's just a dirty trick. It just astonished me," said Bowman, a Jacksonville resident who says she plans to vote for Obama as she did four years ago. "I think they're doing everything they can to win Florida. It's a sorry situation."

The DVD's director, who says he has mailed some 7 million copies to homes in swing states, says that he is unaffiliated with political campaigns or their supporters and that the film reflects his own painstaking research into Obama's family background.

The DVD, "Dreams from My Real Father," posits that the president's true father was a communist agitator, author and poet living in Hawaii named Frank Marshall Davis ? not the Kenyan man who shares the president's name. Both men are now dead.

The title is a reference to Obama's book about his family history. That book does mention a poet named "Frank" who was a friend of Obama's maternal grandfather.

In an interview, DVD director Joel Gilbert described himself as a nonpartisan independent who seeks only to tell what he views as an extremely important story. Gilbert said he did not coordinate distribution of the DVD with any political entity and also took no political contributions to finance it. Yet the DVD was targeted at voters in key battleground states, including 1.5 million in Florida and 1.2 million in Ohio, according to Gilbert's website.

"It's a publicity measure," he said of the free mail distribution. "This has been an effort to force and embarrass the media into covering the content of the film."

Gilbert declined to disclose how the DVD and its distribution were financed, saying his production company is private and not required to. He has also made what he calls "mockumentaries" exploring whether former Beatle Paul McCartney might really be dead ? as was rumored in the 1960s ? and finding Elvis Presley alive and living as a federal agent in Southern California. He has also done films on Islamic-Jewish relations and Iran's strategic ambitions.

Obama campaign spokesman Adam Fetcher declined comment on the DVD.

Another mysterious batch of mailings to voters in at least 23 Florida counties is being investigated by the FBI and state officials. These anonymous letters, which were postmarked from Seattle, raise questions about the voter's citizenship and provide a form that supposedly must immediately be filled out and returned to elections officials. Otherwise, the letter says, the voter's name will be purged from the rolls.

"A nonregistered voter who casts a vote in the State of Florida may be subject to arrest, imprisonment, and/or other criminal sanctions," warns one of the official-looking letters complete with eagle-and-flag logo, which appear to have been aimed mainly at registered Republicans.

Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner has asked all of the state's supervisors of elections to report any similar letters. There could also be federal charges against those responsible.

Voting rights advocates also say there have been scattered complaints of bosses ordering employees to support a particular presidential candidate or face job repercussions. And in the past, students and other groups have been the targets of robocalls falsely saying they can vote on the day after Election Day if the lines are too long.

Marshall said such misinformation tactics surface election after election because it's not illegal in most states to deceive someone about the timing or place of an election, or to lie about a candidate's political affiliation. Most laws, he said, are more geared toward preventing voter intimidation and ensuring physical access to polling places. Those who do get caught in deception usually claim it was all a big misunderstanding.

"It's very difficult to stop," he said. "The tactics have evolved but the law hasn't."

Study: Costs Rise, But Americans Happier With Auto Insurance

With initial damage estimates for Hurricane Sandy pegged at $20 billion or more, insurance companies are facing a very busy couple of weeks. But while they brace for massive payouts, agencies can take heart in one bit of very good news, courtesy of??J.D. Power and Associates' 2012 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study -- namely, that Americans have become more satisfied with their auto insurance companies, even as out-of-pocket costs have risen.

To reach those conclusions, Power surveyed over 12,508 insurance customers who had filed and settled claims within the past six months. The survey took place over an 11-month period, from November 2011 to September 2012.

(Power noted that the survey focused on customers whose vehicles were significantly damaged; those with damage to their car's glass or who only filed claims for roadside assistance were excluded. Stolen vehicles were also excluded.)

Survey participants were asked to rate satisfaction with their insurance company in six areas: "first notice of loss; service interaction; appraisal; repair process; rental experience; and settlement". Scores were doled out on a scale of 0 to 1,000. Here are the major takeaways:

  • Satisfaction improved by six points from last year: the average overall score for 2012 was?852.
  • When it comes to settlement -- arguably?the most important factor -- average scores were up nine points from 2011, resting at 846.
  • Interestingly, those who filed total-loss claims were even happier with their settlements: for them, scores were 16 points higher. That could be due to the fact that payouts for total losses were up an average of $690 from last year -- mostly because of sky-high used-car values.
  • Satisfaction might also be rising because the insured feel like the claims process is more transparent. This year,?64% of those surveyed said that their insurer offered ways to keep them informed of their claim's progress (via online updates and such). In 2011, that figure was 61%.
  • Curiously, satisfaction grew even as out-of-pocket expenses crept upward. On average, respondents paid $403 for deductibles, rentals, and other uncovered expenses, which is up?$26?from 2011.
  • America's favorite insurance company is Auto-Owners Insurance, which earned the highest overall score (887) for the fifth straight year. Rounding out the top five were Amica Mutual and Erie Insurance (tied at 876), and Automobile Club of?Southern California?and COUNTRY (tied at 874).
  • At the other end of the scale, Commerce was America's least-favorite agency, with a score of (781). Esurance fared slightly better (801), as did Encompass (820), 21st Century (821), and Mercury (824).
  • National heavy-hitters were all over the map: State Farm (868), Allstate (863), and Travelers (857) came in above the industry average of 852. Nationwide (848), GEICO (842), Progressive (842), and Farmers (838) didn't.

If you'd like a look at the management discussion of the J.D. Power report (which is less about rankings and more about consumer theory), you can find the PDF here.

And if you happen to live along the eastern coast of the U.S., we hope you're safe and sound. We also hope that you don't have too much need for your insurer, but if you do, we hope the claims process goes smoothly.

Eliminate Domestic Violence for Children's Sake | Psychology Today

The cover of the edition on domestic violence.

The cover of the edition on domestic violence. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Children learn to be what they see and hear on a regular basis, especially at very young ages. To grow up healthy and learn good coping skills, children need to be in a safe nurturing environment with healthy, non-violent caregivers. Children believe that what they see at home is ?normal.? If the home is safe and loving and has good boundaries, that becomes the norm. If violence is how people in the home solve problems, that becomes the model for how things ?should be done.? Children that grow up in violent homes (3.3 million per year in the US) are strongly impacted by the violence. Those that become healthy, non-violent adults have had at least one person give them a ?safe harbor? and help them cope with the trauma of living with violence. Children that grow up in violent homes at a young age, who become violent adults have not had someone to give them sufficient support, nurturing, guidance, boundaries, and a adequately healthy environment for them to overcome their experiences.

DV can be physical, emotional, sexual, verbal, or financial, or can involve restricting contact of family members with people outside of the home. It always involves secrecy and control issues. The secrecy keeps domestic violence alive. Domestic violence is traumatic to the children that witness it. Any significant trauma, such as DV, in the developmental years (0 ? 5) can interfere with brain and skill development of the child. Self-soothing, problem solving, communication, cognition, and interpersonal skills can all be negatively impacted, while a safe environment supports the learning of skills that helps them cope with the problems they will inevitably face in the world.

A home with domestic violence is not a safe, nurturing environment. Additionally, it generally will not stop without the help of an outside agency that has more power than the offender, such as the police and the Courts. Similar to a garden with weeds and no nourishment, the garden will not flourish until the gardener weeds the garden, turns up the soil, and adds nourishment for the plants. A home with domestic violence cannot support healthy growth and development. Someone (the gardener) needs to stop the violence (pull the weeds out of the garden), improve family relationships and problem solving (turn up the soil), and support the healthy growth of all family members (add nourishment). The Court is the weed destroyer and the counselor or social worker is the support system that gives the family the help it needs to become strong and healthy.

There are many examples of domestic violence affecting public figures. Domestic violence in the relationship of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown is well known. How that has and will continue to affect their daughter, Bobbi Kristina, will depend on how involved other relatives were and are in helping to give her safe haven and an alternative nurturing environment. Another example is Bill Clinton who spent the first four years of his life with his grandparents in a nurturing environment while his mother was in nursing school. His young life was later marred by domestic violence. The nurturing environment in the first four years of life probably gave him the foundation he needed to develop early skills. This, coupled with success in school, helped him cope with the domestic violence in his middle childhood and adolescence. Despite domestic violence during those years, he became president of the United States. However, President Clinton?s half-brother, Roger, born in 1956 when President Clinton was 10 years old, would have been exposed to domestic violence at a younger age than the age of the President during exposure and he reportedly has had a checkered past. Research supports exposure to DV at a very young age interferes with the development of basic coping skills. Therefore, it appears that the domestic violence in the Clinton household may have affected the two brothers differently.

Several programs have promise in helping families torn by domestic violence. The Healthy Families Program supports positive family relationships, healthy child development, and improved problem solving from the time the mother is pregnant until the child is five years old. Programs work to engage fathers in the raising of their children. It is a wellness oriented program that gives support, rather than finding fault. Research indicates the program has a good track record for positive family outcomes. Head Start with family involvement is also a program known for supporting families and positive outcomes. There is a U.S. National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 and TTY 1-800-787-3224, as well.

If you or your children are being harmed by domestic violence, you can:

? Seek counseling

? Call the police when you or your children have been hurt

? Leave your home and go to a DV shelter

? Get the support of friends and family

? Educate yourself about the cycle of violence and how it harms you and your children

? Make a safety plan

If your family is experiencing domestic violence, please know that it is harming your children and that there is help for you and your children, but you must reach for it and do so carefully with the support of others.

Satellite images suggest airstrike on Sudan site

CAIRO (AP) ? Satellite images of the aftermath of an explosion at a Sudanese weapons factory this past week suggest the site was hit in an airstrike, a U.S. monitoring group said Saturday.

The Sudanese government has accused Israel of bombing its Yarmouk military complex in Khartoum, killing two people and leaving the factory in ruins.

The images released by the Satellite Sentinel Project to The Associated Press on Saturday showed six 52-foot (16-meter) wide craters near the epicenter of Wednesday's explosion at the compound.

Military experts consulted by the project found the craters to be "consistent with large impact craters created by air-delivered munitions, Satellite Sentinel Project spokesman Jonathan Hutson told the AP.

The target may have been around 40 shipping containers seen at the site in earlier images. The group said the craters center on the area where the containers had been stacked. It did not comment on the allegations of Israeli involvement or who might be behind the strikes.

Jonah Leff, who monitors Sudan for the Geneva-based Small Arms Survey and was not connected to the project, reviewed the images on Saturday and agreed with the group's assessment.

Israeli officials have neither confirmed nor denied striking the site. Instead, they accused Sudan of playing a role in an Iranian-backed network of arms shipments to Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel believes Sudan is a key transit point in the circuitous route that weapons take to the Islamic militant groups in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

Sudan was a major hub for al-Qaida militants and remains a transit for weapon smugglers and African migrant traffickers. Israeli officials believe arms that originate in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas go through Sudan before crossing Egypt's lawless Sinai desert and into Gaza through underground tunnels.

The Satellite Sentinel Project is a partnership between the Enough Project, a Washington-based anti-genocide advocacy group and DigitalGlobe, which operates three commercial satellites and provides geospatial analysis. The project was founded last year with support from actor George Clooney, and in the past has used satellite images to monitor the destruction of villages by Sudanese troops in the country's multiple war zones.

Opened in 1996, Yarmouk is one of two known state-owned weapons manufacturing plants in the Sudanese capital. Sudan prided itself in having a way to produce its own ammunition and weapons despite United Nations and U.S. sanctions.

The satellite images indicate that the Yarmouk facility includes an oil storage facility, a military depot and an ammunition plant.

The monitoring group said the images indicate that the blast "destroyed two buildings and heavily damaged at least 21 others," adding that there was no indication of fire damage at the fuel depot inside the military complex.

The group said it could not be certain the containers, seen in images taken Oct. 12, were still there when explosion took place. But the effects of the blast suggested a "highly volatile cargo" was at the epicenter of the explosion.

"If the explosions resulted from a rocket or missile attack against material stored in the shipping containers, then it was an effective surgical strike that totally destroyed any container" that was at the location, the project said.

Yarmouk is located in a densely populated residential area of the city approximately 11 kilometers (seven miles) southwest of the Khartoum International Airport.

Wednesday's explosion sent exploding ammunition flying into homes in the neighborhood adjacent to the factory, causing panic among residents. Sudanese officials said some people suffered from smoke inhalation.

A man who lives near the factory said that from inside their house, he and his brother heard a load roar of what they believed was a plane just before the boom of the explosion sounded from the factory.

In the aftermath of Wednesday's explosion, Sudanese officials said the government has the right to respond to what the information minister said was a "flagrant attack" by Israel on Sudan's sovereignty and right to strengthen its military capabilities.

In a Friday speech marking Eid al Adha, Islam's biggest holiday, Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir called Israel "short-sighted," according to comments published by the Egyptian state-owned paper Al Ahram. The president likened the incident to the 1998 bombing by American cruise missiles of a Khartoum pharmaceutical factory suspected of links to al-Qaida.

Some Israeli commentators suggested that if Israel did indeed carry out an airstrike causing Wednesday's blast, it might have been a trial run of sorts for an operation in Iran. Both countries are roughly 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) away from Israel, and an air operation would require careful planning and in-flight refueling.

Technology helping to crack oldest undeciphered writing system

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? New technology has allowed researchers to come closer than ever to cracking the world's oldest undeciphered writing system.

Researchers from the University of Oxford and the University of Southampton have developed a Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) System for Ancient Documentary Artefacts (funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation) to capture images of some of the world's most important historical documents. Recently this system was used on objects held in the vaults of the Louvre Museum in Paris.

These images have now been made available online for free public access on the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative website.

Among the documents are manuscripts written in the so-called proto-Elamite writing system used in ancient Iran from 3,200 to 3,000 BC and which is the oldest undeciphered writing system currently known. By viewing extremely high quality images of these documents, and by sharing them with a community of scholars worldwide, the Oxford University team hope to crack the code once and for all.

Dr Jacob Dahl, a co-leader of the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative and a member of Oxford University's Faculty of Oriental Studies, said: 'I have spent the last ten years trying to decipher the proto-Elamite writing system and, with this new technology, I think we are finally on the point of making a breakthrough.

'The quality of the images captured is incredible. And it is important to remember that you cannot decipher a writing system without having reliable images because you will, for example, overlook differences barely visible to the naked eye which may have meaning. Consider for example not being able to distinguish the letter i from the letter t.'

The reflectance transformation imaging technology system designed by staff in the Archaeological Computing Research Group and Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton comprises a dome with 76 lights and a camera positioned at the top of the dome. The manuscript is placed in the centre of the dome, whereafter 76 photos are taken each with one of the 76 lights individually lit. In post-processing the 76 images are joined so that the researcher can move the light across the surface of the digital image and use the difference between light and shadow to highlight never-before-seen details.

'We have never been able to view documents in this quality before,' Dr Dahl explained.

Dr Dahl believes this writing system might be even more interesting than previously thought. He said: 'Looking at contemporary and later writing systems, we would expect to see proto-Elamite use only symbols to represent things, but we think they also used a syllabary -- for example 'cat' would not be represented by a symbol depicting the animal but by symbols for the otherwise unrelated words 'ca' and 'at'.

'Half of the signs used in this way seem to have been invented ex novo for the sounds they represent -- if this turns out to be the case, it would transform fundamentally how we understand early writing where phonetecism is believed to have been developed through the so-called rebus principle (a modern example would be for example "I see you," written with the three signs 'eye', the 'sea', and a 'ewe').'

Some features of the writing system are already known. The scribes had loaned -- or potentially shared -- some signs from/with Mesopotamia, such as the numerical signs and their systems and signs for objects like sheep, goats, cereals and some others. Nevertheless, 80-90% of the signs remain undeciphered.

The writing system died out after only a couple centuries. Dr Dahl said: 'It was used in administration and for agricultural records but it was not used in schools -- the lack of a scholarly tradition meant that a lot of mistakes were made and the writing system may eventually have become useless as an administrative system. Eventually, the system was abandoned after some two hundred years.'

Dr Dahl joked: 'This is probably the world's first case of a collapse of knowledge because of the under-funding of education!'

The Louvre gave the researchers access to the c. 1100 proto-Elamite tablets in its collections, half of which can now be viewed on the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative website.

Dr Dahl said: 'The Louvre collection of early writing from Mesopotamia and Iran is incredibly important -- it contains the first substantial law code, the first record of a battle between kings, the first propaganda, and the first literature. Being able to put these documents online would be a great achievement.'

Dr Dahl said making important documents from early human history publicly accessible is becoming increasingly important, both as a consequence of the ever-expanding influence of cyberscholarship in academic research, but also in many cases more pressingly as a matter of cultural heritage preservation in areas of the world threatened by armed conflict and collapse of security.

'Iraq's cultural heritage has been pillaged in the last 20 years, and the situation in neighbouring Syria is looking dire as well,' he said.

Can Controversial Ocean Iron Fertilization Save Salmon?

What's been described as a "rogue" geoengineering experiment is really an effort, however flawed, to restore salmon abundance

dumping-ironADDING IRON: By adding iron to the Pacific Ocean, as pictured here, the Haida Salmon Restoration Corp. hoped to restore lost salmon abundance--and generate carbon credits too. Image: Courtesy of HSRC

In a bid to restore lost fish abundance, the Haida Salmon Restoration Corp. (HSRC) undertook to mimic the effects of a volcanic eruption by fertilizing the ocean with iron. The idea was to provide the missing nutrient for a plankton bloom that would then trickle up the food web and restore salmon?with the ancillary effects of gathering data on the ocean food web and, potentially, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

"What if this is a means by which ocean pastures can be stewarded and brought back to health?" asks Russ George, chief scientist of the expedition as well as a controversial businessman with a history of attempting to start CO2-removal schemes ranging from reforestation to ocean fertilization. "This is a tiny village of people trying to take care of their backyard."

Old Masset village on the Haida Gwaii Islands off the British Columbia coast did this by contracting George and others to initiate the largest such intentional ocean fertilization effort to date. It authorized the release of roughly 110 metric tons of iron dust, 91 metric tons of the iron sulfate fertilizer commonly used as a lawn treatment and employed in other scientific experiments, and nearly 20 metric tons of the iron oxide found in soils around the world. "It's micronutrient enrichment," Jason McNamee, operations officer and corporate director for the HSRC, told a press conference on October 19. "We took a bag of iron, and we slapped it over one square kilometer [of ocean]."

To do that, this past July the HSRC team motored more than 300 kilometers west from the Haida Gwaii Islands to an ocean eddy in the fishing vessel Ocean Pearl. The area had previously been scouted by collecting water samples since January and lies outside Canadian territorial waters. The team also used more than 20 autonomous oceangoing robots, including two bright yellow gliders and 20 Argo drifter robots on loan from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to survey the scene?work that is ongoing. Over the course of several days the researchers then released the 110 metric tons into the fishing boat's wake in an attempt to raise the levels of iron in the water from one or two parts per trillion up to five to 10, although both concentrations are estimates.

Satellite images as well as maps of chlorophyll abundance appear to show that the iron did indeed fuel a plankton bloom in August. But questions remain: Was it the right kind of bloom to bury carbon? Will it have any effect on the salmon?

Ocean restoration
The HSRC's basic idea is born out of marine biology as well as observations of the aftermath of volcanic eruptions in the region. For example, a lack of iron limits the growth of microscopic plants in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica and elsewhere, a fact that prompted marine biologist John Martin to famously muse: "Give me half a tanker of iron, and I'll give you the next ice age."

In the summer of 2008 Mount Kasatochi in Alaska's Aleutian Islands blew, sending volcanic minerals, including iron dust, far to sea and prompting plankton blooms across the Gulf of Alaska. At the same time, years and years of decline in returning salmon populations led researchers to expect few of the fry from 2008 to return in later years, only to find a record salmon run in Canada's Fraser River in 2010.

Large-scale production of biofuels made from algae poses sustainability concerns

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Scaling up the production of biofuels made from algae to meet at least 5 percent -- approximately 39 billion liters -- of U.S. transportation fuel needs would place unsustainable demands on energy, water, and nutrients, says a new report from the National Research Council. However, these concerns are not a definitive barrier for future production, and innovations that would require research and development could help realize algal biofuels' full potential.

Biofuels derived from algae and cyanobacteria are possible alternatives to petroleum-based fuels and could help the U.S. meet its energy security needs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide (CO2). Algal biofuels offer potential advantages over biofuels made from land plants, including algae's ability to grow on non-croplands in cultivation ponds of freshwater, salt water, or wastewater. The number of companies developing algal biofuels has been increasing, and several oil companies are investing in them. Given these and other interests, the National Research Council was asked to identify sustainability issues associated with large-scale development of algal biofuels.

The committee that wrote the report said that concerns related to large-scale algal biofuel development differ depending on the pathways used to produce the fuels. Producing fuels from algae could be done in many ways, including cultivating freshwater or saltwater algae, growing algae in closed photobioreactors or open-pond systems, processing the oils produced by microalgae, or refining all parts of macroalgae. The committee's sustainability analysis focused on pathways that to date have received active attention. Most of the current development involves growing selected strains of algae in open ponds or closed photobioreactors using various water sources, collecting and extracting the oil from algae or collecting fuel precursors secreted by algae, and then processing the oil into fuel.

The committee pointed out several high-level concerns for large-scale development of algal biofuel, including the relatively large quantity of water required for algae cultivation; magnitude of nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and CO2, needed for cultivation; amount of land area necessary to contain the ponds that grow the algae; and uncertainties in greenhouse gas emissions over the production life cycle. Moreover, the algal biofuel energy return on investment would have to be high, meaning more energy would have to be produced from the biofuels than what is required to cultivate algae and convert them to fuels.

The committee found that to produce the amount of algal biofuel equivalent to 1 liter of gasoline, between 3.15 liters to 3,650 liters of freshwater is required, depending on the production pathway. Replenishing water lost from evaporation in growing systems is a key driver for use of freshwater in production, the committee said. In addition, water use could be a serious concern in an algal biofuel production system that uses freshwater without recycling the "harvest" water.

To produce 39 billion liters of algal biofuels, 6 million to 15 million metric tons of nitrogen and 1 million to 2 million metric tons of phosphorus would be needed each year if the nutrients are not recycled, the report says. These requirements represent 44 percent to 107 percent of the total nitrogen use and 20 percent to 51 percent of the total phosphorus use in the U.S. However, recycling nutrients or utilizing wastewater from agricultural or municipal sources could reduce nutrient and energy use, the committee said.

Another resource that could limit the amount of algal biofuels produced is land area and the number of suitable and available sites for algae to grow. Appropriate topography, climate, proximity to water supplies -- whether freshwater, inland saline water, marine water, or wastewater -- and proximity to nutrient supplies would have to be matched carefully to ensure successful and sustainable fuel production and avoid costs and energy consumption for transporting those resources to cultivation facilities. If the suitable sites for growing algae are near urban or suburban centers or coastal recreation areas, the price of those lands could be prohibitive. A national assessment of land requirements for algae cultivation that takes into account various concerns is needed to inform the potential amount of algal biofuels that could be produced economically in the U.S.

One of the primary motivations for using alternative fuels for transportation is reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, estimates of greenhouse gas emissions over the life cycle of algal biofuel production span a wide range; some studies suggest that algal biofuel production generates less greenhouse gas emissions than petroleum-based fuels while other studies suggest the opposite. These emissions depend on many factors in the production process, including the amount of energy needed to dewater and harvest algae and the electricity sources used.

The committee emphasized that the crucial aspects to sustainable development are positioning algal growth ponds close to water and nutrient resources and recycling essential resources. With proper management and good engineering designs, other environmental effects could be avoided, the committee said. Examples include releasing harvest water in other bodies of water and creating algal blooms and allowing harvest water to seep into ground water.

For algal biofuels to contribute a significant amount of fuels for transportation in the future, the committee said, research and development would be needed to improve algal strains, test additional strains for desired characteristics, advance the materials and methods for growing and processing algae into fuels, and reduce the energy requirements for multiple stages of production. To aid the U.S. Department of Energy in its decision-making process regarding sustainable algal biofuel development, the committee proposed a framework that includes an assessment of sustainability throughout the supply chain, a cumulative impact analysis of resource use or environmental effects, and cost-benefit analyses.

ValoBox Launches Pay-As-You-Go eBook Offering; O?Reilly Media, Guardian Books & Other Publishers Sign On

215936v2-max-250x250Persuading publishers to make their eBooks available to read over the Web is probably quite a big ask. Persuading them to sell those eBooks on a ?pay-as-you-go? basis, enabling readers to purchase specific pages or chapters of a book only -- well, that?s just crazy talk. Not so crazy, it seems, that one UK startup is taking a stab: ValoBox launches its on-demand browser-based eBook service today, with publishers O?Reilly Media, Profile Books, Guardian Books, Constable & Robinson, and Snowbooks, signed on at debut.

Marketing 2.0: Combining Forces of Marketing and Customer Service

The tension between Marketing and Customer Service?

In my professional past, I have worked at Marketing and Customer Service and I never quite understood the tension between the two. In an obvious case of hyperbole, I would like to state the following.

Marketing tries to improve sales by targetting ?the persona customer?, losing sight of the individual customers as they go along. Customer service is always busy answering all individual questions which never seem to fit in the bodice Marketing imposed, and as such, have difficulty in believing what Marketing is telling them to do.

?

Why Marketing and Customer Service will soon be BFF's

Now, before you go yelling at your colleagues of the other business unit, I have good news: Marketing and Customer Service are going to be best friends forever, real soon! Yep, BFF?s. Why? Because your customer has taken control. How? A team-up of public social media with ever more mobile internet.?

?

Social media forces Marketing and Customer Service to change?

Marketing has, for too long and too much, been about pushing products down customer?s throats in a shouting action. ?Hear, hear, we have the best product for this-and-that and as you cannot compare it to any other on the market: buy it, and buy it now.? Well, that?s a thing of the past. Customers are investigating now what they are buying, and teaming up together on Facebook, Twitter and lots of other networks. There is no use anymore in spending money on Marketing campaigns for unnecessary or bad ?products if customers can break it with a short personal text, tell all their friends about it and go public in a matter of clicks.

Marketing was about shouting

Customer Service has been responding to individuals in a one-on-one relationship. As no one else was listening during those conversations, the customer was sometimes cut loose. ?OK, something got messed up, but you are not important enough, so shut up and move along. Ne-eext!? Before you bash on Customer Service: the people there don?t like doing this, their management just forces them to do so as they believed giving in to the customer?s needs was like giving in to terrorists. Well, it may seem hard to believe, but there is in fact a slight difference. :)

It's the customers that make a business successful. No buyers, no business. No happy customers, no long-term business. And as those customers are now talking to everyone quadrupled instantly about you, you?d better start listening to what they have to say. Or they will bye-bye you in the blink of an eye.

Customer service becomes foundation of marketing

Customer Service becomes the foundation of Marketing

And this makes my point: through social media, Customer Service is becoming the foundation of Marketing. In my humble opinion, Marketing 2.0 is all about ?listening and communicating with your customers, to learn from their experiences, better fit their needs and as such ameliorate your business and products.? Social media is the way in which it happens. The way, not the means: no use in having tons of fans if no one is listening.?

If you have built an audience on social media, and you are responding to their remarks, questions and sometimes filthy words, you can start shouting again. Or better, you can start speaking again, because you will have an audience that will be listening to you. This means: Marketing with a much higher ROI, no shooting in the dark anymore. And in the meantime, you gain lots of information about those customers.?The use of an all-in-one social media management tool is a huge help here.

In the end, it is a win for all: for customers and for businesses. But it takes a leap of faith and quite some rethinking of your business to attain it. Good luck!

Traditionalists expel Holocaust-denying bishop

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? A traditionalist group of breakaway Catholics on Wednesday expelled a Holocaust-denying bishop whose views sparked a major Vatican crisis in 2009.

The Society of St. Pius X said its governing council expelled Bishop Richard Williamson because he ignored a deadline to "declare his submission" to its authority and had called for the society's superior to resign.

A spokesman for the group said Williamson's comments about the Holocaust were part of the reason for his expulsion.

In a 2009 interview with Swedish TV, Williamson denied that any Jews were killed in Nazi gas chambers.

The comments earned him a criminal prosecution in Germany, where Holocaust denial is a crime, and caused great embarrassment to German-born Pope Benedict XVI, who had lifted Williamson's excommunication from the Church on the day the interview was broadcast.

But Williamson also angered the group's superiors by posting attacks against them on a blog that was "full of crude ideas" and by performing sacraments despite being forbidden to do so, said the spokesman, Andreas Steiner. "The third thing, which was key, was that he always criticized the talks with Rome (the Vatican)," Steiner told The Associated Press.

The Society of St. Pius X was founded in 1969, opposed to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. In 1988, the Vatican excommunicated the group's founder and four bishops ? including Williamson ? after he consecrated them without papal consent.

Breast Cancer's Pink Ribbons: Are We ... - The Lingerie Addict

Today?s guest post is by Elisabeth Dale, one of my close friends as well as a breast expert and founder of The Breast Life, a website that?s all about breast health and well-being. Elisabeth is also the author of bOObs: A Guide to Your Girls, one of my favorite books because it talks about a woman?s breasts at every stage of her life. If you?re interested in keeping up with Elisabeth, you can find her on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Elisabeth Dale

I have mixed feelings about breast cancer awareness month. Some of my ambivalence has to do with my family?s medical history. My mother was diagnosed in the late 1960s, when women stayed silent about the disease and had no say in their treatment. So I understand the importance of talking about and sharing information on the subject.

But over the years, my concerns have shifted. I?m less anxious about finding breast cancer in my own body than I am about finding a cure. I know that one in 8 women are at risk during their lifetime, up from 1 in 11 back when pink ribbons first came on the scene. Despite advances in detection and treatment and millions of charitable dollars raised, it turns out that aren?t much closer to finding out what causes breast cancer.

Sure, we can talk about being aware, wear a ?save the boobies? bracelet or a ?cop a feel? t-shirt, but has all the focus on being aware of our breasts reduced our chances of getting the disease in the first place?

Not really. Medical experts now advise against teaching women to conduct formal monthly breast self-exams. Breast Self Exams don?t save lives or find breast cancers earlier than mammograms. I?ve been getting mammograms for some 25 years now. Turns out that all those visits to a breast-imaging center weren?t necessary. Such screenings are no longer recommended for women under age 40, with the latest guidelines suggesting women wait until age 50 (unless there is a specific family history or exposure to radiation). Still charitable breast cancer organizations continue to tout and even overstate the benefits of BSE?s and mammograms, while neglecting to mention the risks.

Younger and younger women are cautioned to be ?aware,? while the median age of breast cancer patients is 61 years old and over 50% of those diagnosed are older than 62. It?s more common to see pink promotions displaying perky, uplifted cleavage, rather than photos of mature, at-risk bosoms. Breast cancer may be deadlier in younger populations but it is still less common. Today?s Breast Cancer Awareness Month appears focused on saving an image of girlish breasts, not an aging woman?s life.

This over-emphasis on early detection once made me assume that if I were only diligent enough to find a lump in its earliest stages, I could count on being cured. But the truth is that scientists don?t know which of the many breast cancers are slower growing or more deadly. Researchers have only figured out a causal link in about 15% of all cases.

According to the National Breast Cancer Coalition, ?The incidence of women diagnosed with advanced breast cancer has not changed. Rates of diagnosis of truly lethal disease have remained stable since 1975.? I?m left with the knowledge that my two biggest risk factors of being female and aging aren?t ones I can change. I have learned to remind myself that it is heart disease, and not breast cancer, that takes more women?s lives each year in the US. I?ve learned to focus on what I can do to keep myself in the best of heart health, knowing that regular exercise and a reasonably nutritious diet will benefit the whole of me, including my boobs.

I?ve also found new ways to support breast cancer research, education, and advocacy programs. The following initiatives are all focused on measuring greater progress:

  1. Before purchasing or participating in any Breast Cancer Awareness promotions, Think Before You Pink. Visit the Breast Cancer Action?s informative and consumer friendly website, where you?ll find a list of questions you can ask before buying pink products.
  2. Consider joining Dr. Susan Love?s Health of Women Study. This important international on-line medical questionnaire provides researchers with information they need to learn more about the causes of breast cancer.
  3. Check out the National Breast Cancer Coalition?s 2012 Breast Cancer Progress Report and read about their campaign to coordinate research efforts and private funding. Learn about the myths and truths surrounding Breast Cancer.

Women have always been the leaders and active participants in campaigns to raise ?awareness.? We are also the biggest consumers of pink merchandise. My fear is that if we keep wrapping the problem in the same pretty pink ribbons, we?ll continue to get the same results.

What do you think about the campaigns to raise awareness and pink ribbons? Let?s talk about it in the comments.

Michael Fassbender misidentified by sports announcer

October 22, 2012 20:29:45 Posted at October 22, 2012 20:29:45 Photos:
WENN

Last week, I wrote this article about Michael Fassbender. It was offensive to some: the Fassbender fangirls. And one of them, she let me know:

Hi Lainey,

Your reading comprehension skills are sub par at best if you really think Fassbender yelled at the waiter in that article. You're such an insufferable, lying, c-nt. You know good and well he didn't but you'd write anything for the attention you think it's going to draw. I hope his people sue you one day. And you're a coward for not having a comment section. Everyone knows this. What's the matter, you ugly cow? Still upset Fassy didn't pay one f-cking iota of attention to you last year at TIFF? Nice watermarks on the photos, by the way. Why don't you take a tip from other sites like Just Jared and NOT put your hideous logo over people's faces? You've got stupidity for days, you know that? F-cking c-nt. This is why everyone hates you. And those pics have been on Tumblr since last weekend. Late, as usual, with your bullsh-t.

By the way, there's a rumor going around that you're the racist bitch who has been posting negative things about him online. I'm apt to agree and will help to spread that tidbit of info any way I can. I'm sure you understand how these things go.

You have a nice day.

?You?ve got stupidity for days? is a really great expression. But why would I post negative things about Michael Fassbender elsewhere online if I have my own website? No, no, don?t answer that. It?s a conversation that never ends. The point is, Michael Fassbender girls, Twi-Hards, Cumberbatch women, Gosling people, Brangelunatics, these FANS, they are very, very good at being angry and defending their beloved(s).

So...

If I were the announcer (who, obviously, has stupidity for days) calling the Texas/Baylor game the other day, I would consider extra security. This comparison is HILARIOUS. Terrible, yes. But HILARIOUS. Listen:

Thanks MK!

5 things to watch for in the presidential debate

Five things to watch for when President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney debate foreign policy Monday night:

1. THE TIEBREAKER: Romney ran away with the first. Obama edged him in the second. Stakes are high for their third and final showdown. Does that mean a repeat of last week's ornery tone? Or will the gravity of the issues ? war, terrorism, world leadership ? inspire more dignified discourse?

2. REMATCH ON LIBYA: It sparked one of the hottest exchanges of the second debate. And there's more to it than when Obama called the consulate attack an "act of terror." Expect to hear about failed security, intelligence lapses and the Obama administration's shifting account of what happened in Libya. After Obama's parry last week, Romney gets another try.

3. ROMNEY'S TEST: The former governor and businessman has limited foreign experience. He took hits for comments that ruffled British and Palestinian leaders last summer, and for hastening to criticize the administration's response even as chaotic events were unfolding in Libya and Egypt. This debate is the prime moment for Romney to display the knowledge and judgment to lead on the world stage.

4. ON DEFENSE: Obama must defend four years of foreign policy. Expect Romney to accuse the president of weakening America's world leadership by mishandling Iran's nuclear ambitions, the pullout from Afghanistan, the Syrian conflict and the U.S. relationship with Israel. Can Obama rebut that criticism and focus on ending the Iraq War and killing Osama bin Laden?

5. A NEW MEME? First Big Bird. Then "binders full of women." Watch Twitter to see whether another phrase catches fire while the debaters are still onstage.

Health and Fitness ? Weight Loss Secrets ? 17085th Edition | Health ...

Being active makes a person healthy and strong. It is not just for people who have a weight problem but for everyone who likes to stay fit.

There is a lot a person can do such jog or walk every morning, play basketball or any other sport with friends but if a person wants to have muscles and look lean, then one can sign up and workout in a gym.

People workout for 3 reasons;

The first is that the person is overweight and the only way to lose those extra pounds will be to reduce ones calorie intake and at the same time workout in the gym.

The second is that the person is underweight and the only way to add extra pounds is to have more calories in ones diet and workout.

The third is just for fun and to keep that person in shape.

The best exercise plan should have cardiovascular and weight training exercises. This helps burn calories and increase the muscle to fat ratio that will increase ones metabolism and gain or lose weight.

Just like taking any medicine, one should first consult the doctor before undergoing any form of exercise.

Here are some benefits of exercising;

1. It is the easiest way to maintain and improve ones health from a variety of diseases and premature death.

2. Studies have shown that it makes a person feels happier and increases ones self esteem preventing one from falling into depression or anxiety.

3. An active lifestyle makes a person live longer than a person who doesn?t.

Working out for someone who has not done it before should be done gradually. Endurance will not be built in a day and doing it repeatedly will surely be beneficial to the person.

It is advisable to workout regularly with a reasonable diet.

A person can consult with a dietitian or a health professional to really help plan a good diet program. It starts by evaluating the lifestyle and the health of the patient before any program can be made.

Afterwards, this is thoroughly discussed and recommended to the person which usually consists of an eating plan and an exercise program that does not require the use of supplements or one to purchase any expensive fitness equipment.

A good diet should have food from all the food groups.

This is made up by 2 things. The first is carbohydrates. The food that a person consumes should have vitamins, minerals and fiber. A lot of this can come from oats, rice, potatoes and cereals. The best still come from vegetables and fruits since these have phytochemicals, enzymes and micronutrients that are essential for a healthy diet.

The second is fat which can come from mono and poly saturated food sources rather than animal fats. Since fat contains more than double the number of calories in food, this should be taken in small quantities to gain or lose weight.

Another way to stay healthy is to give up some vices. Most people smoke and drink. Smoking has been proven to cause lung cancer and other diseases as well complications for women giving birth. Excessive drinking has also shown to do the same.

For people who don?t smoke, it is best to stay away from people who do since studies have shown that nonsmokers are also at risk of developing cancer due to secondary smoke inhalation.

Keywords Matter! - Business 2 Community

Bad things are happening to good people all over the internet. Thousands, if not millions of online marketers, businesspeople and retailers are struggling for traffic, performing abysmally in search results, and have no idea where they went wrong. They might have the best web design, or some of the fanciest new site features, but they dropped the ball on one of the first and most important steps. These people are all casualties of bad keyword practices.

Keywords are the fundamental building blocks of any good online marketing campaign. If you have any hopes of making it big on the internet, you?ve got to do your research, and you need to do it right. We?re here to show you how to do it right, from start to finish.

What Are Keywords, and Are They Necessary?

Keywords are more than just the words you describe your website with. Keywords are the words and phrases you anticipate other visitors and customers will use in search engines to find you. Keywords can?t only make sense to you, they have to make sense to everyone else. 90% of internet users will look for information through search engines, and you need to make sure that they can find you by optimizing for the right keywords.

Doing the research and finding the right keywords people will use to find your services is what separates the casual web users from the serious online business people. You have to know where, when, and how to move away from your own short-list of ?personal favorite? keywords, and start digging into facts, figures, data points and research on real keywords that perform well. It?s tough, but it?s manageable, and you can do it with the right help.

First Steps: Understanding What Makes A Keyword ?Valuable?

Which of these keywords is more valuable? ?Cheap golf lessons,? or ?golf lessons??

At first glance, it?s hard to tell. There?s only one word difference between the two, ?cheap.? If you had to value one phrase over the other, surely ?cheap golf lessons? would be the better keyword. It conveys intent and purpose. Plus, who doesn?t like a discount?

When you look at the actual data in software like Google?s Keyword Research Tool, you might be surprised. ?Golf lessons? is such a widely used keyword, you could spend far too much money on PPC ads with it. Trying to rank for this keyword is too difficult because it sees millions of searches each month?and millions of other sites are competing for those search results. It isn?t worthless, but the alternative is more appealing.

?Cheap golf lessons? is more specific, and sees a fraction of the monthly searches that its more general alternative does. Although it could be a more cost-effective PPC keyword, you might see more conversions from this keyword by using it in your content marketing optimizations. Both of these keywords could be great for on-site blog writing and content generation. If you had to choose one or the other to spend money on in a PPC campaign, the more specific the keyword, the better.

There is a difference between a keyword and a valuable keyword: a valuable keyword sends people that are more willing to convert on your products to your website, pre-qualifies visitors with added context in phrases, and helps you convert more and faster on higher-quality search results. High-value keywords might be longer than the generic keyword you initially thought you would use, but they will produce more conversions and will result in much lower PPC advertising costs overall. A plain old keyword chosen without research or strategy might eventually do all of that. If you?re lucky.

Keyword Research Is Absolutely Vital

When you get down to it, keywords are easily the most important part of your online marketing strategies. They determine how people will find you, how visible you are online, and how relevant you are in related searches. Finding valuable keywords is part scientific exploration and part creative planning, and finding valuable keywords is crucial to SEO success. Knowing how to use keywords is another valuable skill, and overdoing it can get you in trouble.

Over the next few posts, I?ll be exploring these steps further and teaching you how to get started on in-depth keyword research like the pros. After that, we?ll look at best practices for content generation: how you can use those keywords to create effective, organic, search engine optimized content that pulls customers directly to you.

Google?s Stock Takes A Dive After Accidental Mid-Day Earnings Release, Trading Halted On Google?s Request

stock-diveGoogle accidentally released its Q3 2012 earnings report far ahead of schedule today and is blaming the financial printer RR Donnelley for this mixup. When the release first appeared on the SEC's website (including a number of editorial comments), it was not clear if Google accidentally filed the report early or if this was on purpose, but a mid-day earnings release like this is highly unusual. One thing that was clear, though, was that the stock market was not happy about this. By the time trading was halted at 12:50pm EDT, Google's stock was down about 9% and traded for well under $700.

TuneIn Radio Pro updated with holo design

Android Central

One of the most popular radio apps on Android, TuneIn Radio Pro, has been updated with a proper holo design. Since the release of Ice Cream Sandwich, Google has been engaged in getting developers on board with a design language that helps unify the user experience across apps. This "holo" design has been implemented in many of Google's own apps, and now many headline developers have implemented it as well.

Bits of polish show in a swipe across stations to choose available streaming qualities, pull to refresh and a proper blue / white / gray design. Beyond just looking better, the design change in TuneIn Radio Pro offers better usability. Swiping between UI panes feels more natural, and gives users access to "related", "twitter", "favorites", "options" and "recent" right from the main "now playing" screen.

We've got a few side-by-side comparison screenshots of the old (left) and new (right) design after the break. If you like what you see, you can buy the Pro version of the app at the Google Play Store link above for 99 cents.
