Vertu TI now available in red or blue limited editions, only 1,000 of each made

Vertu TI now available in red or blue limited editions, only 1,000 of each made

It's been almost half a year since Vertu launched its first-ever Android phone, the TI, and now the company's decided to throw in a couple of limited editions to lure the big spenders. As pictured above, the new Vertu TI Colours collection is wrapped in either "Sunset Red" or "Midnight Blue" calf leather, and only 1,000 units are made for each color. As per typical Vertu style, there's a unique number etched on the back to indicate which of the 1,000 units yours is.

The rest of this hand-crafted, matt grey titanium phone remains unchanged otherwise, namely its 3.7-inch tough sapphire screen, Android 4.0, 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 64GB storage plus an 8-megapixel camera. And of course, the phone still comes with the famed Vertu Concierge, a "100 percent independent" service that CEO Perry Oosting is very proud of. To join this exclusive club, you'll have to somehow fork out a whopping HK$90,000 or €8,900 (about US$11,700) -- just a tad more expensive than the TI Titanium Pure Black edition, but also more flamboyant. This author already spotted these new phones at Vertu's Hong Kong Airport store, and he's currently accepting donations.

Attacks kill at least 11 people in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) ? Suicide bombers and shootings in northern and central Iraq were among attacks across the country that left eleven dead on Sunday.

They were the latest incidents in a wave of violence that has claimed more than 2,000 lives since the start of April. Militants, building on Sunni discontent with the Shiite-led government, appear to have grown stronger in central and northern Iraq.

The commander of the army's 12th Division, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Khalaf, said the assault on the police station near the town of Hawija started with a gunman on foot opening fire on the guards. A suicide bomber with an explosives belt then blew himself up in the reception area, and a suicide car bomber rammed his vehicle into the building, Khalaf said. Three policemen were killed and five others wounded.

Hawija, a former insurgent stronghold, is about 240 kilometers (150 miles) north of Baghdad. The predominantly Sunni town and surrounding areas have been tense since April, when Iraqi security forces launched a deadly crackdown on a Sunni protest there in which 23 people, including three soldiers, died.

In the nearby city of Tuz Khormato, 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad, two parked car bombs went off in the early morning in a residential area, killing one civilian and wounding 27 others, a police officer said.

Also Sunday, a mortar round hit a motel in central Baghdad, killing three civilians and wounding nine others, police said.

At night, gunmen, carrying guns fitted with silencers opened fire on a group of people standing in the street in Baghdad's northern Qahira neighborhood, killing four and wounding two others, said two police officials.

Qahira neighborhood was the scene of a deadly suicide attack inside a Shiite mosque last week. At least 34 people were killed in that attack.

Two medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information to reporters.

Supreme Court punts on affirmative-action case

The Supreme Court has surprised legal experts by declining to strike down the University of Texas' use of race in undergraduate admissions. On Monday, the justices sent the case back to a lower court for a rehearing, dodging a decision on whether affirmative-action policies at public colleges around the country are unconstitutional.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court's conservative-leaning swing vote, wrote the opinion for Fisher v. University of Texas, which was decided 7-1. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the court's liberal leader, dissented, arguing that the lower court's decision in favor of affirmative action should stand. Kennedy said the federal Fifth Circuit must rehear the case to decide whether UT "offered sufficient evidence to prove that its admissions program is narrowly tailored to obtain the educational benefits of diversity." The court also requires the lower court to decide whether the college could use any "race neutral" means of creating a diverse campus before resorting to affirmative action.

"Strict scrutiny imposes on the university the ultimate burden of demonstrating, before turning to racial classifications, that available, workable race-neutral alternatives do not suffice," the justices wrote.

The decision comes as a surprise, since during oral arguments in the case in October, many of the conservative-leaning justices seemed poised to issue a broader ruling invalidating the use of race in admissions. Kennedy has also frequently expressed skepticism of affirmative-action programs.

"Affirmative action lives to see another day," Adam Winkler, a constitutional law expert at UCLA, told Yahoo News. "The Supreme Court seemed prepared to strike a real blow against affirmative action back in October. But the Fisher case reaffirms [previous] Supreme Court cases that allow universities to take race into account."

Abigail Noel Fisher brought suit against the University of Texas after she was denied admission in 2008. UT automatically admits Texans who graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school classes, but fills its remaining seats by judging applicants on a combination of GPA, test scores, race and other factors. Fisher claimed she was discriminated against because she is white when she was denied admission. The college argued that Fisher's GPA and standardized test scores made her inadmissible regardless of her race and that using race as one factor in admission helps it maintain a diverse student body.

The Supreme Court established in 2003 in Grutter v. Bollinger that universities could use race as a factor in admissions as long as they did not use quotas (for example, that 10 percent of the class must be black). The justices said affirmative action was still necessary to counteract the effects of institutionalized racism that had prevented minorities from attending college in the past. The majority wrote that they believed that in 25 years, affirmative action would no longer be necessary and should be stopped. This "sunset" provision was skewered by the four dissenting justices.

The Fisher case was argued 10 months ago, and many legal experts were stumped as to why the justices were taking so long to release an opinion. The court has agreed to hear another case dealing with affirmative action next fall and may issue a broader decision then.

Justice Elena Kagan, a President Barack Obama appointee, recused herself from the case, most likely due to her work on it as solicitor general.

Frenkel to return as Israel's central bank chief

By Steven Scheer

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Jacob Frenkel, an inflation hawk who was Bank of Israel governor in the 1990s, will be returning to the helm of the central bank, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Yair Lapid said on Sunday.

They appointed Frenkel to replace Stanley Fischer, who is stepping down at the end of June after eight years on the job, having guided Israel's economy through the global financial crisis.

Frenkel, 70, beat deputy governor Karnit Flug, who will likely be acting central bank chief until Frenkel starts. The date of his arrival was not announced.

"He is a world renowned figure, which is what Netanyahu was looking for," said HSBC economist Jonathan Katz.

As governor between 1991 and 2000, Frenkel was credited with reducing inflation, liberalising financial markets and removing foreign exchange controls.

He is currently chairman of JPMorgan Chase International and also served as vice chairman of insurer American International Group as well as chairman of Merrill Lynch International. Frenkel also is the head of the Group of Thirty, a private consulting group on international and financial issues.

"We are certainly talking about a governor who will act as the responsible adult, who will fill the position of Fischer with quality and authority," said Joseph Fraiman, chief executive at Prico Risk Management and Investments.

"No less important, Frenkel will benefit from the international credit that is greatly needed for the Israeli economy, especially in the current period," he added.

Frenkel, whose appointment needs cabinet approval, will face several challenges including continuing Fischer's insistence that the government stick to responsible policies and working to halt fast-rising home prices.

Israel's economy grew 3.2 percent in 2012, but is expected to slow to a 2.8 percent this year excluding the start of natural gas production.

Inflation, which ranged between 1.3 and 18 percent in the 1990s, was at an annual rate of 0.9 percent in May. At the same time, the shekel is strong.

To encourage economic growth and keep exports competitive, the Bank of Israel reduced its benchmark interest rate twice in May, to 1.25 percent. The central bank next decides on Monday and analysts largely believe the key rate will stay unchanged.

When Frenkel was last in the job, the governor alone made interest rate decisions. Now, there is a six-member monetary policy committee with the bank chief as chairman.

"Frenkel will need to work harmoniously with the monetary council he inherited from Fischer," said Yaniv Pagot, chief strategist at the Ayalon Group. "This is not a simple challenge that could, in a certain situation, bring the first cracks."

He said that, with Israel's foreign exchange reserves nearing $80 billion, it would be interesting to see whether Frenkel would continue intervening in the foreign exchange market and buy dollars to defend Israel's exports if the shekel continues to appreciate.

Astros look strong in win over Cubs

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:46 p.m. ET June 22, 2013

CHICAGO (AP) - The Houston Astros used power hitting and precision execution to turn an early deficit into an exciting victory.

Ronny Cedeno's squeeze bunt scored Justin Maxwell with the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning to lead Houston over the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Saturday after J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer in the sixth.

"In order to play these types of close games, you have to play good baseball," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "What I love about our ballclub is even though we make some mistakes, they don't hang their head. They keep battling, they keep fighting and we find a way to either get ourselves back into the game or make it a ballgame every night."

Martinez did just that by tying the score with a long home run after Jose Altuve and Chris Carter singled.

"Altuve and Carter were able to get on and without them getting on with two outs, the game is not the same," Martinez said. "It feels good just to tie the game up and give our team a chance."

Jose Cisnero (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. Jose Veras earned his 15th save in 18 chances.

"Quality pitch after quality pitch, I'll tell you what I like, that his facial expression, his emotion, it never changed," Porter said.

Maxwell hit a leadoff double in the ninth against Kevin Gregg (2-1) and moved to third on Matt Dominguez's sacrifice. Cedeno followed with another sacrifice bunt, putting the Astros ahead.

Nate Schierholtz hit a solo homer in the fifth to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead. It was his 10th homer this season, setting a career high.

Alfonso Soriano reached scoring position in the bottom of the eighth with a double to left field but was called out by second base umpire David Rackley on a pickoff play that drew Chicago manager Dale Sveum out of the dugout for an argument.

Replays showed Soriano made it back to the bag before the tag.

"I know I had tagged the base before his glove tagged my hands," Soriano said. "I know my lead at second base. It doesn't matter how good of a move the pitcher has, I know my lead and I know I can get back. It doesn't matter if he has a good move."

Ryan Sweeney then hit a single that would have given Soriano a great opportunity to score. Instead, the Cubs loaded the bases before Darwin Barney flied out to end the inning.

"Soriano is safe at second base, so there is a run," Sveum said. "It's a broken record. We just can't seem to get that hit to break the game open in those situations. We get guys on and we just can't get them in."

Chicago starter Travis Wood appeared to be in control after getting a pair of outs to start the sixth inning. But after hard-hit singles by Altuve and Carter, Martinez tied the game with a long home run that cleared the left-field bleachers on its way to Waveland Avenue.

"Out of the park, literally out of the park, that was my only one," Martinez said. "This is really the only park you can do it. Everywhere else you've got to hit it 900 feet."

Wood had given up just two hits heading into the sixth and looked primed to earn his first victory in his last four starts.

"Really, it just falls back on me not being able to execute the pitches at that point," Wood said. "I missed bad (on the home run pitch). It was supposed to be back door and it ended up coming all the way across the plate and that just can't happen."

Luis Valbuena put the Cubs ahead with a two-run single in the third after a pair of Houston errors.

Barney hit a grounder to third that looked like a sure double play, but Dominguez threw high to second. Astros catcher Carlos Corporan compounded the mistake with an errant pickoff attempt that hit second base and ricocheted into shallow left field, allowing both runners to advance.

NOTES: The Cubs are 7-3 in interleague play with 10 games remaining. They haven't had a winning record against the American League since 2007 (8-4). ... Jeff Samardzija (4-7, 3.35 ERA) pitches Sunday for Chicago against Jordan Lyles (4-1, 3.22).

CSN: Bautista's HR gives Jays 10th straight win

The Orioles had been playing from behind all day. Limiting the Toronto Blue Jays to just two runs and two hits in seven innings, the Orioles thought they had a chance.

In the eighth, Jose Bautista hit a two-run home run and the Orioles lost to Toronto 4-2 at Rogers Centre.

After reaching a season-high 11 games over .500, the Orioles (42-33) have lost two in a row. Toronto (37-36) has won 10 straight.

Darren O?Day, who relieved Miguel Gonzalez (5-3) in the eighth, allowed the home run, his 16th of the season. As Bautista rounded third, he and the Orioles reliever Darren O?Day exchanged words.

Munenori Kawasaki singled with one out off Gonzalez. Melky Cabrera hit into a fielder?s choice. Rajai Davis ran for Cabrera and scored on the home run.

Darren Oliver (3-1) got the win. Casey Janssen picked up his 17th save.?

O?Day had not allowed a home run in his previous 12 outings.

The Blue Jays scored their first run in the bottom of the first when leadoff batter Cabrera walked, moved to third on a single by Adam Lind and scored on a wild pitch by Gonzalez.

The Orioles tied the score in the fifth off Chien-Ming Wang. Chris Davis walked, and after he moved to second on J.J. Hardy?s infield out, Davis scored on Travis Ishikawa?s single.

Gonzalez allowed a leadoff home run to Macier Izturis in the fifth, only the second hit he gave up.

He allowed three runs on three hits in 7 1/3 innings. Gonzalez walked three and struck out five.

In the top of the eighth, Taylor Teagarden launched his second home run of the season. It was just Teagarden?s third hit, but his second homer. He also homered in Detroit on Wednesday.?

Daycare may benefit kids of depressed mothers

By Genevra Pittman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Children of depressed mothers are less likely to have emotional problems if they attend daycare, a new Canadian study suggests.

Researchers have known that depressed women are more likely to have kids who also develop depression and anxiety disorders, and that those problems can extend through the teenage years.

"It's interesting to think of this as a possible type of intervention and a way of supporting mothers in general, but especially mothers who are at risk," said Catherine Herba, from the University of Quebec at Montreal.

The researchers followed close to 1,800 children born in Quebec in 1997-1998 and their mothers through the child's fifth birthday.

Women were regularly surveyed about their depression symptoms and reported on their child's emotional problems and separation anxiety, as well as the type of childcare they used.

About 19 percent of mothers had depression symptoms during the study period. And as previous research has suggested, their children were almost twice as likely to develop emotional problems and separation anxiety before age five, Herba's team wrote in JAMA Psychiatry.

However, being in childcare seemed to mitigate that effect. The association was particularly strong for group-based childcare, as opposed to care provided by a relative or babysitter.

Among children with depressed mothers, attending daycare was tied to a 79 percent reduced risk of developing emotional problems, compared to kids who stayed home with their moms.

Across the study, between nine and 31 percent of preschoolers had emotional problems depending on whether their mothers were depressed and where they received care.

How many hours a week kids spent in childcare did not seem as important as the type of care itself, the researchers found. They said the structured setting of group-based care, having care provided by a trained professional and spending time with children of a similar age may all be benefits to that type of childcare.

"Center-based care can really serve as a buffer for children of depressed mothers," said Catherine Ayoub, who has studied Early Head Start programs at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

"As those mothers are paying some attention to their own depressive symptoms, as they're struggling with depression, the children can be buffered from the effects of depression on their development," Ayoub, who wasn't involved in the new study, told Reuters Health.

Her research has suggested programs that reach out to both children and mothers themselves can be especially beneficial for families over the long run.

Ayoub, also from the Brazelton Touchpoints Center, said women should know that they can still be good mothers if they are depressed, and also that there are many ways to treat depression - so they can get better.

"Yes, you may be depressed, but you also can really move toward resilience," she said. "It's okay to find the best possible care for your child that's also a way to take care of yourself."

Herba said that doctors should be looking for new mothers who are depressed and speak to them about the potential benefits of using childcare and getting help for themselves.

"It's quite important that we give good support to these mothers and try to facilitate this as much as possible," she said.

On first glance, you probably thought these images were four different pictures stitched together with Pic Stitch for Instagram or something. I don't blame you, it looks like a perfect windowpane. But what's crazy is if you look closer, these four images are actually just one single photograph. What.

Here's a look of the set, which purposely trips your mind out, from another angle. It reveals that everything in the image above is in the same shot:

Tokyo court rules in Apple's favor in patent battle, Samsung has deja vu

In case you forgot, Samsung and Apple's legal squabbles didn't end in US federal court last year: the litigation rages on in international courts. Stop us if you've heard this one -- Samsung and Apple are caught up in a lawsuit focusing in part on Cupertino's bounce back patent, and things aren't looking great for Sammy's lawyers. It's a familiar story, but this time it's playing out in a Japanese courtroom, with a Tokyo judge deciding that a number of Samsung devices are in violation of Apple's scrolling technology. What's this mean to the consumer? Nothing yet -- the court still hasn't calculated damages or approved an injunction, and this isn't the only legal battle the firms are waging in the country's court system. Feel free to brush up on your kanji and check out the source link below for more details, or skip on over to Bloomberg for a more digestible account.

Backed Or Whacked: Reading And Writing Through Crowdfunding

Backed or Whacked logoEditor?s note: Ross Rubin is principal analyst at Reticle Research and blogs at Techspressive. An ancient and once-sacred bond between author and audience, reading and writing have become but two more tasks along with a multitude of other things that we do on a host of digital devices -- watcing videos, listening to music, playing games, and really anything except using Facebook Home. Still, there are some for whom the intimate act of interface between pen and paper retains more magic than all the electrons powering all the devices in the world have not been able to recreate. Moon: Tebow can't cut it in CFL

DIRECTV'S Seventh Annual Celebrity Beach Bowl - GameGetty Images

It?s been a minute since we?ve consulted our CFL rulebook, but we need to see how many kilograms or hectares or whatever they penalize you for piling on.

Because Hall of Famer Warren Moon added his voice to the down-with-Tim Tebow chorus, saying the Canadian Football League wasn?t a good fit because of the emphasis on passing, saying that was Tebow?s ?biggest problem.?

?You have to be able to throw the ball up there if anything and they throw the ball a lot,? Moon told Houston?s 610-AM, via the New York Daily News.??There are only three downs so the passing game is much more important up there. You have got to be able to throw it and I think that?s his biggest problem, just being [able] to complete passes, be an accurate passer. I think he?s a really good athlete playing the position but I don?t think that?s enough sometimes.?

Moon spent six years in the CFL before he got to the NFL, but said the difference between him and Doug Flutie going North of the border and Tebow was about chances, which Tebow has had.

?We were very good passers. That had nothing to do with it. We didn?t have to go up there and try and change our throwing motion,? Moon said. ?We didn?t have to go up there and try and become more accurate. We just needed to get the opportunity. . . .

?He?s worked as hard as anybody can but there just hasn?t been that much improvement made in his quarterback fundamentals and his technique so he might think about maybe playing another position if he wants to stay in the NFL.?

At the moment, no one?s rushing to Tebow?s defense and saying Moon?s wrong. But not succeeding in the mess that was New York last year shouldn?t necessarily be an indictment, and the guy has had playoff success.

There are a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL who can?t say that, and still have employment without being destroyed in the court of public opinion every day.

2013 Zero FX: The Hooligan-Approved Electric Motorcycle

Zero FX

?

Range, range, range-- that's all EV buyers think about. And if you've ever been stranded because a vehicle ran out of juice, be it electric, fossil, or otherwise, you probably understand the engineering obsession with low rolling resistance tires, optimized aerodynamics, and?ultimate battery capacity.

?

Zero Motorcycles has expanded the practical capabilities of their bikes for 2013, and the Scotts Valley, California-based company's flagship S model now claims 137 miles of city range, making it the longest legged EV motorcycle on the market.?

?

During a recent test of the $15,995 DS ZF11.4 model, I flogged the thing on the highway, intermittently peaking at near triple-digit speeds, and extracted about 33 miles from a half charge, which is consistent with (if not, better than) their claims of 76 miles of range at a constant 55 mph. But the real treat came when I switched bikes and climbed aboard Zero's $11,990 FX model (seen above), a nasty little armaggedon-ready steed with aggro bodywork and a claimed combined range of only 43 miles.

?

Why the modest mileage? The FX is the black sheep of the Zero lineup, packing a 70 ft-lb, 44 hp wallop in a package that weighs a feathery 275 pounds. Though my test ride was brief, it was far from forgettable: thanks to its rip-snorting power-to-weight ratio, the FX spent most of its time on one wheel, lunging ahead with the eager thrust of a short-geared flat track racer. Put simply, the FX is everything you'd never expect from an EV-- and for that reason alone, I'm relieved such a frivolous, genre busting bike exists.

?

You may be craving more information about the perfectly sensible, range-focused DS model-- and you certainly may find it elsewhere on PM.com. But trust me when I say this: the FX is the one you'll want to cozy up with on a nice, bendy (and preferably short) road.

Feds bust New York sex trafficking ring

NEW YORK (AP) ? The young Mexican women were driven to rural New Jersey, U.S. authorities said, where their handlers used threats to make them have sex with 25 farmworkers a day. Or they were confined to dingy brothels in the New York City area that advertised their services with "chica cards," business cards passed out on street corners to attract customers. They were paid very little, or nothing at all.

Their ordeal was detailed in a criminal complaint charging 13 people with smuggling dozens into the United States and forcing them into prostitution. Some of the defendants were to appear Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan to face multiple counts including sex trafficking and interstate transportation for prostitution.

The ring "lured their unsuspecting victims to the United States and then consigned them to a living hell," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.

The investigation was among several aimed at "blockading the repugnant sex trafficking corridor" used to exploit victims from Tenancingo, Mexico, said James Hayes, head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in New York.

Tenancingo, an impoverished town in Tlaxcala state, has long been a notorious haven for pimps who use a combination of threats, abuse and broken promises of marriage and jobs to put innocent victims, some only in their teens, on a path to sex slavery in Mexico City and in large cities in the United States.

Most victims eventually manage to escape, authorities say in court papers. But, they add, "without legal status in the United States, without family and friends for support, without employment opportunities and as a result of the trauma they suffered, victims sometimes return to prostitution."

In interviews with investigators, one unidentified woman described how when she refused to work at brothels located in apartments in Queens and suburban Yonkers, she and her child were locked out of their home on a cold winter night. She also told authorities that her pimps, believing she was pregnant, forced to take drugs intended to induce a miscarriage, and that she was beaten when she once tried to withhold some of her earnings.

Another woman recounted becoming romantically involved with a man who smuggled her into the United States, only to learn he made a living delivering prostitutes to New Jersey to have sex with farmworkers. She said he used threats to force her into the sex trade for two years before he was deported.

According to the complaint, the ring provided its victims with condoms and birth control pills while making them have sex with up to 30 men a day. The men paid $30 for 15 minutes. The women sometimes got a $15 cut but that usually went to the traffickers.

If convicted, some of the defendants face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The evidence includes wiretaps of customers and pimps haggling over prices, the complaint says.

"What girls do you have?" one customer asked.

"From Salvador and Mexico."

"How do they look?"

"They both look good."

The pimp quoted a price of $70.

"Can you do it for 60?"

not fair to leave it sitting? - Horsetopia Forum

Marguerite Henry, who wrote "Misty of Chincoteague" also wrote a short story about a horse that refused to retire. I think it was called "The Routine of Happiness".

The "oldest horse in America", the Florida Cracker gelding named Flicka, was a cow horse, and he went with the cowboys to bring the cows in, doing his job without a rider. If you had tried to pen him or tie him up, he'd have busted loose or laid down and died.

I've bought/been given a couple of those "too good to be sitting around" horses, and they've been good ones.

My good TWH gelding, that I rode for 19 years had been standing in a pasture for several years when I got him, and he loved to work, whether it be showing, trail riding, or working cows. In his final years, if we took any of the other horses out to ride, he not only objected vocally and by running the fence, he'd then beat them up when we turned them back in with him!

Horses have work ethics like people. Some are lazy, some are hyper-industrious. I've had both, and they can both be hard to deal with!

Anyone Can Become A Content Curator On Wiosio

Guide | woisioWiosio is a Turkish company being featured at Disrupt NY?s Startup Alley this year, and it?s a little like what watching television would be like if your friends took over the programming. At first glance, Wiosio most closely resembles an everyday television programming lineup. There are a number of predefined channels that are organized by category, each of which streams a series of 15 minute ?shows? that air one after the other on a 24/7 basis. And yet, you won?t find any programming from any of the four major TV networks on Wiosio. Nor will you be able locate any shows from any of the major cable networks. Each 15 minute show is in actuality a running playlist of YouTube videos, photo galleries, songs, or blog posts that have been curated and packaged by Wiosio?s users. Wiosio has a number of channels called ?stages?, that are defined by specific arenas of interest and location. For example, you?ll find a ?Music? stage for general music related content, and a ?New York Music? stage for content specific to the New York music scene. You can also subscribe to the stages that most interest you, and thus create a specific channel that is tailored to the content you?d like to consume. But what if you want to do more than just consume? If you?re looking to get your own curated content on Wiosio, it?s a fairly simple process. When you first sign up with Wiosio, you?re given 5,000 Wiosio points that you can use to bid for auctioned spaces of airtime. Airtime on each stage is auctioned off in 15 minute chunks, and the auction runs until the very second that slot of content is scheduled to begin streaming on the stage. The more people upvote your shows when they air, the more Wiosio points you obtain, increasing your influence as a content curator in the Wiosio network. “You can say that the media manufactures its own stars, news, and facts,” says?Mujdat Ayoguz, founder of Woisio, “and imposes them on people.” Ayoguz believes that Woisio is a platform that truly democratizes content curation and distribution. Wiosio launched in the United States in December, and released their iOS app last Friday in an effort to expand their user base here. According to Wiosio, they?ve already established a presence in Turkey in the ?tens of thousands? of users range, and are planning to launch in

Discovery helps explain how children develop rare, fatal disease

Apr. 30, 2013 ? One of 100,000 children is born with Menkes disease, a genetic disorder that affects the body's ability to properly absorb copper from food and leads to neurodegeneration, seizures, impaired movement, stunted growth and, often, death before age 3. Now, a team of biochemistry researchers at the University of Missouri has published conclusive scientific evidence that the gene ATP7A is essential for the dietary absorption of the nutrient copper. Their work with laboratory mice also provides a greater understanding of how this gene impacts Menkes disease as scientists search for a treatment.

Humans cannot survive if their bodies are lacking the ATP7A gene, yet children can develop Menkes disease when the gene is mutated or missing. Previously, scientists did not have a good model to test the gene's function or develop an understanding of the underlying causes of the disease symptoms. In his new study, Michael Petris, associate professor of biochemistry, was able to modify mice so that they were missing the ATP7A gene in certain areas of the body, specifically the intestinal track where nutrient absorption takes place.

"These findings help us to understand where in the body the function of this gene is vital and how the loss of the gene in certain tissues can give rise to Menke's disease," said Petris, who is a researcher in the Bond Life Sciences Center and holds an appointment in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology. "We want to continue to explore the underlying biology of Menke's disease to determine where we should focus our research efforts in the future. If we know which organs or tissues are most responsible for transporting copper throughout the body, we can focus on making sure the gene is expressed in those areas. This disease is ideal for gene therapy down the road."

Petris found that young mice missing the ATP7A gene in their intestinal cells were unable to absorb copper from food, resulting in an overall copper deficiency that mimics symptoms of Menkes disease in children. Petris says it's vital to ensure that the developing newborns absorb enough copper during the neonatal period when the demand for the mineral is highest.

"Copper is a little-appreciated but essential trace mineral in all body tissues," Petris said. "Cells cannot properly use oxygen without copper; it helps in the formation of red blood cells, and it helps keep the blood vessels, nerves, skin, immune system and bones healthy. Normally, people absorb enough copper through their food. However, in the bodies of those with Menkes disease, copper begins to accumulate at abnormally low levels in the liver and brain and at higher than normal levels in the kidney and intestinal lining."

Newborn screening for this disorder is not routine, and early detection is infrequent because it can arise spontaneously in families, Petris said. Many times, the disease is not detected until the symptoms are noticed, and by that time, it can be too late for any aggressive treatments.

"The clinical signs of Menkes disease are subtle in the beginning, so the disease is rarely treated early enough to make a significant difference," he said. "However, a single dose of copper injected into mice within a few days of birth restored normal growth and life expectancy. Early intervention was critical because treatment that began after symptoms developed wasn't successful."

Petris says that understanding the roles of copper in biology may have far-reaching health implications for the general population because copper underpins many facets of biology, including the growth of cancer tumors and the formation of toxic proteins in Alzheimer's disease.

The development of these mice provides a novel experimental system in which to test treatments for patients with this disease. The early-stage results of this research are promising, but additional studies are needed.

The research was funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Chinese Loans At Issue In Debt Fight

WASHINGTON (AP) - Despite what you may have heard, China isn't the country's biggest creditor. America is.

The bulk of the national debt - soon to exceed a staggering $17 trillion - is held by the Federal Reserve, Social Security system, various pension plans for civil service workers and military personnel, U.S. banks, mutual funds, private pension plans, insurance companies and individual domestic investors.

China is responsible for just a shade over 7 percent of that total debt. And while it remains the single largest foreign lender (just ahead of Japan), China's been slowly trimming its holdings, down from nearly 10 percent a few years ago. Overall, all foreign investors - including national central banks - account for roughly one third of the total outstanding federal debt.

Also, China is suddenly having debt problems of its own. Heavy recent lending by its banks comes as the recovery in the world's second-largest economy seems to be stalling. The export giant posted a rare trade deficit in March.

The national debt will soon be front-and-center again as a deeply divided Congress wrestles with an expected new Obama administration request to increase the government's borrowing authority, the legislatively set debt ceiling. The higher limit would not authorize borrowing for new spending but just enables the government to pay all the bills already racked up.

The upcoming summer debate could be a repeat of the divisive debt-ceiling crisis in August 2011 when weeks of political irresolution nearly plunged the U.S. into its first-ever financial default - and did trigger a downgrade in the government's once-sterling credit rating.

Congressional leaders are already drawing lines in the sand for the next big fiscal fight. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has said the only way the GOP-led House will go along with raising the country's borrowing ceiling was if President Barack Obama and the Democrats came up with a "dollar-for-dollar" amount in budget cuts.

Yet despite China's relatively shrinking share of the U.S. debt, it continues to be the top poster child for financing America's deficit spending habit, a favorite target for politicians in both parties.

It's not as if U.S. leaders approach China's bankers extending a tin cup and begging for loans. The Chinese government does what many individual investors do - it simply buys and holds widely available U.S. Treasury bills, bonds and notes.

U.S. politicians see the mountain of debt, but investors globally view U.S. Treasury securities as among the world's safest financial havens, reflected in part by their current super-low yields.

Bill Clinton in 1992 branded China's leaders the "butchers of Beijing." Texas Gov. George W. Bush eight years later blasted outgoing President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore, Bush's Democrat challenger, for policies he suggested appeased Beijing.

Democrat Sen. Barack Obama, in turn, accused then-President Bush in 2008 of "taking out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children." And GOP challenger Mitt Romney last year claimed that, as president, Obama "let China run all over us." Romney vowed to declare China a "currency manipulator on Day One" if elected.

China holds just $1.22 trillion in U.S. Treasury bonds and bills, or 7.3 percent of the current $16.88 trillion total national debt, according to the Treasury Department's "Major Foreign Holders of Treasury Securities" for February, the most recent month available.

China also holds about $200 billion in long-term securities of U.S. agencies, including bonds of nationalized mortgage holders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, although it has been steadily trimming these holdings since 2008.

Social Security holds $2.7 trillion of the debt in its trust fund, in the form of special unmarketable Treasury bonds. The Federal Reserve holds a $1.7 trillion portfolio of Treasury notes and bonds, much of it accumulated over the past four years with its heavy purchase of U.S. securities to stimulate the economy and hold down interest rates.

Together, Social Security and the Fed are holding over 25 percent of the total debt.
